Fue inaugurado en 1904, en el area en que se encontraba el antiguo ghetto (creado en 1555 por orden del Papa Pablo IV).Si bien en Italia existen comunidades Ashkenazim y Sefaradim, es interesante destacar que esta sinagoga pertenece al Nusaj Italki (rito italiano), es decir, un rito autóctono de Italia con costumbres, tradiciones y plegarias independientes de las de los judíos Ashkenazíes y Sefaradíes. Tambien esta fue la primer sinagoga visitada por un papa, cuando Juan Pablo II fue recibido aquí por el Gran Rabino Toaff en 1986.La comunidad judía de Roma es posiblemente la más antigua del mundo, en continua actividad. Se tienen registros de su existencia que datan del siglo II a.e.c.. Durante la Shoah, fueron deportados a Auschwits más de 2.000 judíos de Roma. Hoy en día vivien 15.000 judíos en la ciudad.

Although there are in Italy Ashekenazi and Sephardi communities, is interesting to emphasize that this synagogue belongs to the Nusah Italki (Italian rite), that is to say, a native rite of Italy with customs, traditions and prayers, independent of those of the Ashkenazi and Sefaradi Jews. This was also the first syangogue visited by a pope, when John Paul II was received here by the Chief Rabbi Toaff en 1986.
The Jewish community of Rome is possibly the oldest of the world, in continuous activity. There are registries of their existence that date from century II BCE. During the Holocaust, more than 2,000 Jews of Rome were deported to Auschwits. Nowadays 15,000 Jews live in the city.
