Esta sinagoga fue construida en 1270. Hay distintas versiones sobre el origen de su nombre. Algunos dicen que Altneushul proviene de la voz hebrea "Al-Tnai Shul", es decir, Shul (sinagoga, en Idish)construido "bajo la condición" de usarlo sólo en el exilio, esperando volver a Israel con la llegada del Mashíaj.
Otros dicen que al construirlo fue llamado "el Shul nuevo" o "Neu-Shul". Con el correr de los años pasó a ser el "viejo Shul nuevo", o en Idish, "Alt-neu-Shul".

This synagogue was constructed in 1270. There are different versions concerning the origin of its name. Some say that Altneushul comes from the Hebrew voice “Al-Tnai Shul”, which means Shul constructed “under the condition” for using it only in exile, hoping to return to Israel with the arrival of the Mashiaj. Others say that when it was built, it was called "the new Shul” or “Neu-Shul”. After some years it turned to be the “old new Shul”, or in Yidish, “Alt-neu-Shul”.
